HANDS-ON NUMERICAL METHODS FOR NONLINEAR ORDINARY AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS: SECOND INTAKE
National Advanced School of Engineering of Yaounde, University of Yaounde I, Yaounde, Cameroon
2nd December 2023
Ordinary and partial differential equations are widely used to model situations both in fundamental research and in engineering. In most of the situations, analytical solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations lack, insights are obtained from numerical methods devised for the specific type of solution at hand. The fields of application of these numerical methods are many and varied: physics (quantum mechanics, biophysics, transport of information via fiber optics, renewable energy, etc., materials science), epidemiology, population dynamics, finance (management of risks, risk management in finance, etc.), dynamics of ecosystems and many others. One of the major obstacle faced by African scientists is that they do no master numerical methods.
This ACAS school project aims to:
Help the participants acquire basics of MATLAB.
Present in a clear and succinct way the fundamentals of numerical methods for solving ordinary and partial differential equations.
Help participants implement numerical techniques in the programming language MATLAB so that they will be able to concretely solve ordinary and partial differential equation problems encountered in various fields of research.
Many practical sessions along with small projects will help participants clarify the theoretical tools exposed in addition to significantly improve their programming experience by writing their own numerical codes. Bibliographical references and future directions will help participants to deepen the knowledge acquired. This second intake shall focus on solving some nonlinear continuous and discrete partial differential equations by means of finite differences, Runge-Kutta methods and a few on pseudo-spectral methods.
